Using Steps to calories calculator
Estimate walking time from steps divided by measured cadence, then use the MET energy equation for that duration.
Step count alone cannot determine calories. Enter your measured cadence and a MET that matches your speed, terrain and load. The illustrative 3.8 MET value is Compendium code 17190: level walking at 2.8-3.4 mph on a firm surface, adults 19-59. It is not inferred from cadence. Gross calories include standard resting energy. This is an estimate, not an exercise or weight-loss prescription.
A worked example
For walking steps = 6000, body weight (kg) = 70, measured cadence (steps/minute) = 100, met for your actual walking activity = 3.8, estimated gross calories (kcal) = 279.3.

Example results for walking steps
These examples use Body weight (kg): 70; Measured cadence (steps/minute): 100; MET for your actual walking activity: 3.8. They are reference calculations, not recommended settings.
| Walking steps | Estimated gross calories (kcal) |
|---|---|
| 3000 | 140 |
| 6000 | 279 |
| 12000 | 559 |
