Using Harris Benedict calculator
Estimate daily basal energy expenditure with the original 1919 Harris-Benedict equation.
An adult prediction from body weight, height and age, not a measured metabolic rate or an activity-adjusted calorie target. The historical sex-specific equations can differ from modern equations and from an individual measurement. Illness, pregnancy, unusual body composition and growth need a different assessment.
A worked example
For body weight (kg) = 70, height (cm) = 175, age (years) = 30, original equation = Male, predicted basal energy (kcal/day) = 1702.0125.

Example results for body weight (kg)
These examples use Height (cm): 175; Age (years): 30; Original equation: Male. They are reference calculations, not recommended settings.
| Body weight (kg) | Predicted basal energy (kcal/day) |
|---|---|
| 35 | 1221 |
| 70 | 1702 |
| 140 | 2665 |
