How to turn 1/6 into a decimal
Divide the top number by the bottom one: 1 ÷ 6. 6 does not go into 1, so write 0 and a decimal point, put a 0 after the 1 and divide:
- 10 ÷ 6 = 1, remainder 4 (1 × 6 = 6)
- Bring down a 0: 40 ÷ 6 = 6, remainder 4 (6 × 6 = 36). Remainder 4 again, the one step 2 started from, so from step 2 on the digits repeat forever: 0.16666…
To read it as a percentage, move the decimal point two places to the right: 16.67%.
