Choose the format the next place needs
JPG suits photos: it makes small files, but it cannot be see-through, so transparent parts take the background color you choose. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and keeps transparency, which suits screenshots, logos and drawings; a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than as JPG. WebP does both: Google puts its photos at 25 to 34% smaller than JPGs of the same quality, and it keeps transparency.
Each picture is opened by your browser and saved again in the new format at the same pixel size. The sizes shown before and after are the real byte counts of both files. Saving a JPG as PNG does not bring back detail that JPG compression removed; it only stops further loss.
SVG files are drawn as pictures at their own size, or two or four times it, so a logo stays sharp on a high-resolution screen. Text in an SVG uses the fonts on your device, and images it links to elsewhere are not loaded.
Worked example
The example is a 640 × 360 PNG with see-through corners. Converted to JPG at quality 90, its corners turn white and the file gets smaller; choose WebP and the corners stay see-through in a smaller file still.
Before you rely on the result
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG files up to 20 MB each, 16 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side, up to 50 at a time. Animated WebP and PNG files are refused, and a GIF gives its first frame. HEIC photos open only in a browser that can read them. The output is JPG, PNG or WebP; EXIF metadata, including location, is not copied, and a photo is turned upright first. Files are processed on your device and are not uploaded or saved.
