Using Marriage tax calculator
Compare 2026 ordinary federal income tax for two single filers with a married couple filing jointly.
This illustration uses the basic standard deductions and ordinary income brackets for 2026. It excludes credits, itemized deductions, preferential capital-gain rates, age/blindness additions, senior deductions, payroll taxes, AMT, state taxes and income-dependent deductions. The single-filer comparison is hypothetical; married people cannot simply choose to file as single. This is not a filing recommendation or a full marriage-penalty estimate.
A worked example
With incomes of $80,000 and $0, the basic 2026 standard deductions leave $63,900 of single taxable income or $47,800 jointly. Ordinary federal tax is $8,770 versus $5,240: $3,530 less jointly before any other tax rules.
