Using IV drip rate calculator
Divide the prescribed volume by its duration for mL/hour; multiply by the actual giving-set drop factor and divide by 60 for drops/minute.
For checking arithmetic from an existing order, not choosing treatment or a safe infusion rate. Example values are a practice problem. Confirm the order, fluid, actual giving set, pump settings and patient-specific limits with a qualified clinician. The drop result is unrounded; this does not choose administration rounding.
A worked example
For already-prescribed total volume (ml) = 1000, already-prescribed duration (hours) = 8, drop factor printed on the giving set (drops/ml) = 20, rate (ml/hour) = 125.

Example results for already-prescribed total volume (ml)
These examples use Already-prescribed duration (hours): 8; Drop factor printed on the giving set (drops/mL): 20. They are reference calculations, not recommended settings.
| Already-prescribed total volume (mL) | Rate (mL/hour) |
|---|---|
| 500 | 62.5 |
| 1000 | 125 |
| 2000 | 250 |
