How to turn 3/7 into a decimal
Divide the top number by the bottom one: 3 ÷ 7. 7 does not go into 3, so write 0 and a decimal point, put a 0 after the 3 and divide:
- 30 ÷ 7 = 4, remainder 2 (4 × 7 = 28)
- Bring down a 0: 20 ÷ 7 = 2, remainder 6 (2 × 7 = 14)
- Bring down a 0: 60 ÷ 7 = 8, remainder 4 (8 × 7 = 56)
- Bring down a 0: 40 ÷ 7 = 5, remainder 5 (5 × 7 = 35)
- Bring down a 0: 50 ÷ 7 = 7, remainder 1 (7 × 7 = 49)
- Bring down a 0: 10 ÷ 7 = 1, remainder 3 (1 × 7 = 7). Remainder 3 again, the number the division started from, so the digits repeat forever: 0.428571428…
To read it as a percentage, move the decimal point two places to the right: 42.86%.
