Using Sample size calculator
Plan a proportion estimate using n₀ = z²p(1 − p)/error², with optional finite-population correction.
Normal approximation for a simple random sample. The default z = 1.96 is approximately 95% two-sided confidence. No allowance for nonresponse, clustering, design effects or hypothesis-test power. Expected proportions near 0 or 1 need a more suitable method.
A worked example
Example inputs: margin of error (percentage points) = 5, expected population proportion (%) = 50, normal critical value z = 1.96, population size (0 for unlimited) = 0. Required sample size = 385.

Example results for margin of error (percentage points)
These examples use Expected population proportion (%): 50; Normal critical value z: 1.96; Population size (0 for unlimited): 0. They are reference calculations, not recommended settings.
| Margin of error (percentage points) | Required sample size |
|---|---|
| 2.5 | 1537 |
| 5 | 385 |
| 10 | 97 |
