Chicago notes and bibliography vs author-date

Choose the Chicago system your assignment requires: notes and bibliography, or author-date. The general citation generator offers both bundled styles.

Choose the system before copying

The Chicago tool starts with author-date. In the general citation generator, choose Chicago notes and bibliography for a note-style citation or Chicago author-date for an author-date citation.

The bundled author-date style is 18th edition; the notes and bibliography style is 17th edition. If your assignment specifies another edition or a house variant, check it before using the output. The 18th edition (2024) is current; the notes style here still follows the 17th.

Place each output where it belongs

Reference is the bibliography entry. In-text citation is the citation produced by the selected style; in notes mode, use it as the starting text of a note in your editor.

The generator processes one source and previews its first citation. It does not manage later shortened notes, note numbering or repeated citations in a full document. Add a quotation locator and review these details where required.
