APA vs MLA in-text citations: what to check

Use the style required for your document for both its in-text citations and its source list. Do not mix the output of different style selections.

A reference and an in-text citation have different jobs

Reference gives the source-list entry. In-text citation gives a short citation for the body of the document. The two output boxes refer to the same source details.

The bundled APA style uses an author-date citation. The bundled MLA style uses an author-based citation and can use a locator when one is supplied. This interface does not supply quotation locators; add the relevant location in your editor.

Compare without changing the source

Enter the same source in the APA and MLA tools. Compare the In-text citation outputs, keeping the author and year unchanged. A style change should not become a change to the facts about the source.

Each result is made in isolation. Several works by the same author, repeated citations or a citation naming several sources need checking in the context of the full document.
