The share of a standard normal distribution that lies to the left of each z-score, from −3.49 to 3.49, to four decimals. Negative z-scores come first, then positive.

Find your z-score to one decimal place in the left column, then its second decimal in the top row. For z = 1.96, row 1.9 and column 0.06 meet at 0.9750: 97.50% of values lie below 1.96 standard deviations above the mean.

Right tail, two tails and the area between two z-scores

Right of z: subtract the table value from 1. Right of 1.96: 1 − 0.9750 = 0.0250.
Between two z-scores: subtract the smaller table value from the larger. Between −1 and 2: 0.9772 − 0.1587 = 0.8185.
Outside −z and z (both tails): double the table value of −z. Outside ±1.96: 2 × 0.0250 = 0.0500, the 5% of a two-tailed test at the 95% level.

Worked example: from a score to a percentage

A test has a mean of 70 and a standard deviation of 10. A score of 85 is z = (85 − 70) ÷ 10 = 1.5 standard deviations above the mean. Row 1.5, column 0.00 gives 0.9332: about 93.32% of scores fall below 85, and 1 − 0.9332 = 0.0668, about 6.68%, fall above it.

The z-score calculator opens on this example and gives z = 1.5. The normal distribution calculator works without rounding z to two decimals: open this example in the normal distribution calculator and it shows the same areas to more decimals, 93.3193% at or below 85 and 6.68072% above it. Both assume the scores follow a normal distribution; a z-score alone does not make them normal.

Which layout is this?

This is the cumulative layout: each value is the area from the far left up to z. Some textbooks print the area between the mean and z instead, for positive z only. That layout, with the area beyond z, is on the normal distribution table page. For a positive z, a value here minus 0.5 gives the value there: 0.9750 − 0.5 = 0.4750 for z = 1.96.

How these values were computed

Each value is the area under the standard normal curve to the left of z, computed with the same numerical integration as our normal distribution calculator and rounded to four decimals. Every value was checked against a separate computation from the error function. The definitions follow the NIST Engineering Statistics Handbook. Below −3.49 lies 0.0002 of the area to four decimals, and the same above 3.49.
