Normal distribution table
The standard normal table in the layout many textbooks print: the area between the mean and z, and the area beyond z, for z from 0 to 3.49, to four decimals.
Find z to one decimal place in the left column, then its second decimal in the top row. For z = 1.96, the first table gives 0.4750: that share of values lies between the mean and 1.96 standard deviations above it. The second gives 0.0250, the share beyond. The curve is symmetric, so a negative z reads the same on the other side of the mean.
For a z-score with more decimals, or beyond 3.49, the normal distribution calculator gives the exact area.
Area between the mean and z
The share of values between the mean (z = 0) and z. Row 1.9 with column 0.06 is z = 1.96.

Worked example: any normal distribution
Test scores follow a normal distribution with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. For a score of 130, z = (130 − 100) ÷ 15 = 2.00. The first table gives 0.4772 at z = 2.00, so 0.5 + 0.4772 = 0.9772 of scores, 97.72%, fall at or below 130. The second table gives 0.0228, 2.28%, above it.
The normal distribution calculator opens on this example and shows the same areas to more decimals: 97.725% at or below 130 and 2.27501% above it. The z-score calculator does the first step for any value. Both assume the values follow a normal distribution.
The 68–95–99.7 rule from the table
Twice the first table's value at z = 1.00, 2.00 and 3.00 gives the share of values within 1, 2 and 3 standard deviations of the mean: 0.6826, 0.9544 and 0.9974. Before rounding they are 0.6827, 0.9545 and 0.9973, the familiar 68%, 95% and 99.7%.
Which layout is this?
Each value in the first table starts at the mean. The z score table gives the cumulative layout instead, the area from the far left up to z, for negative and positive z. For a positive z, a value there is 0.5 plus the value here: 0.5 + 0.4750 = 0.9750 for z = 1.96.
How these values were computed
Each value is an area under the standard normal curve, computed with the same numerical integration as our normal distribution calculator and rounded to four decimals: beyond z directly, and between the mean and z as 0.5 minus the area beyond. Every value was checked against a separate computation from the error function. The definitions follow the NIST Engineering Statistics Handbook.
