Word counter

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines as you type.

Privacy: runs in your browser

This tool processes your input in this browser. Inputs and results are excluded from analytics. Recent tools save tool names, visit counts and last-visit times. Favorites store only tool names. Draft saving is optional and stays on this device; delete saved text with the draft controls. Loading text from a URL is optional and contacts that server; its URL and your IP address are visible to the server. When a button sends your result to another tool, it waits in this tab until that tool opens it, for up to a minute, and is then deleted.

Copy link includes the inputs you choose to share in the address. Anyone with that link can reopen them. Files and generated results are excluded. Password and key tools share settings only.

Visible characters count joined emoji and accents as one. Code points, bytes and letters can give different totals. Words follow the letter, number, apostrophe and hyphen rule explained below.

Count definitions and encoding details

Visible characters group joined emoji and combining accents. Words keep internal apostrophes and hyphens; don’t and well-made each count as one. A blank line starts a paragraph. Line wrapping on screen does not add a line.

Reading time, frequent words and a local draft

These are editable planning assumptions, not a measurement of your pace. Time equals word count divided by the speed you enter.

Draft saving is off.

Keyword density and frequent phrases

Case is ignored, and overlapping phrases count. Share is how often a phrase appears out of all the places it could start. Hiding common words does not change that total. These counts are not an SEO score or a recommended density.

Writing timer

0 seconds · 0 net words added · 0 words/minute

Words per minute uses net words added while the timer runs divided by active minutes. Deleting words reduces the net count. Pasted words count too; this measures this session, not typing skill. Text written while paused is excluded. Reloading clears the timer.

Sharing and starting over

A copied link includes what you entered and your settings, so anyone with it can see them. Leave private text out. Files and results are not included; random draws are made again.

Start over puts the tool back to its starting values and closes any open file or device. Drafts you saved stay on this device until you delete them.

What counts as a word?

Words are runs of letters or numbers. Apostrophes and hyphens inside a word stay together: don’t and well-made each count as one. An emoji by itself is not a word.

Before you rely on the result

Sentence counts follow punctuation and include a final unfinished fragment. Abbreviations and unusual punctuation can change that count. A word processor may use a different rule.
