HTTP status codes explained
Look up the IANA assignment for an HTTP status code, or search the official description. Each result includes its response class and standards reference, keeping temporary and obsolete assignment notes visible.
A worked example
404 appears as Not Found in the client-error class. This identifies the response code; it does not tell you whether a missing page was deleted, mistyped or hidden by a server rule.
Before you use the result
A dated registry snapshot, not a live website check. Temporary registrations retain their published expiry note. Status descriptions do not establish browser behavior or diagnose a server.
