Using Freight class calculator
Calculate packaged freight density and the corresponding class on the NMFTA 13-sub density scale.
Uses the published 2025-1 density scale, including classes 60 at 30-35, 55 at 35-50, and 50 at 50 or more pounds per cubic foot. Dimensions must include the pallet, packaging and overhang. This does not look up an NMFC commodity item or determine handling, liability, stowability or carrier exceptions. Confirm the current item uses this scale; some items have fixed classes or different breaks. One package or handling unit per calculation.
A worked example
For packaged weight (pounds) = 450, maximum packaged length (inches) = 48, maximum packaged width (inches) = 40, maximum packaged height (inches) = 45, density-scale freight class = 100.

Example results for packaged weight (pounds)
These examples use Maximum packaged length (inches): 48; Maximum packaged width (inches): 40; Maximum packaged height (inches): 45. They are reference calculations, not recommended settings.
| Packaged weight (pounds) | Density-scale freight class |
|---|---|
| 225 | 175 |
| 450 | 100 |
| 900 | 70 |
